ELAC: Reading in Silence, Connecting in Thought

ELAC held a group reading event, “Silent Reading,” in collaboration with Baca Bareng Jogja Community at Universitas Sanata Dharma, Yogyakarta (23/11). The event aimed to encourage reading habits and provide an opportunity for participants to discuss books together.

The event took place in the student hall at Campus 1, starting from 10:00 until 12:00 WIB. It opened with a welcoming speech by Stepy, followed by remarks from ELAC chairman Oliv, who also helped organize the event, and Adit, founder of Baca Bareng Jogja Community.

After the introductions, participants began the main session, reading books individually or using titles provided by the committee. The reading session was followed by a discussion where participants shared their thoughts on the readings and explored the plots or issues raised in the books. Volunteers who contributed to the discussion were given books for themselves to keep.

Ayna, one of the participants, said, “I personally joined this event because I like reading books. Also, I simply want to join such an event because it’s been widespreaded.”

Oliv, chairman of ELAC, stated, “this event is solely to boost our reading culture and to gain and build connections with others by reading together. Reading in any media is important but filtering it is also essential because there are readings that need to be avoided. For example, when the topic is forwarded to hatred rather than discussing the actual topic, like that.”

At the end of the event, participants took group photos for documentation (MF).
